The Best Time of Day for Outdoor Photos in Sioux Falls

Lighting plays one of the biggest roles in creating beautiful portraits. And when it comes to outdoor photography, there is a magical time photographers love most. It’s called golden hour.

What Is Golden Hour?

Golden hour happens twice a day:

  • shortly after sunrise
  • just before sunset

During this time, the sun sits lower in the sky, creating warm, glowing light that is incredibly flattering.

In Sioux Falls, photography sessions during the golden hour at sunset are often the most popular choice for families and seniors. boho senior portrait of girl wearing orange and white crown dress standing in prairie field during golden hour near Sioux Falls South Dakota senior photographerBoho Senior Portrait in orange and white floral Dress at Golden HourA beautiful boho-inspired senior portrait captured during golden hour in a prairie field near Sioux Falls, South Dakota, featuring a senior wearing an orange and white floral dress. cowboy riding horse silhouette during golden hour sunset in South Dakota prairie field near Sioux Falls western lifestyle and senior photographyCowboy Horseback Silhouette at Golden Hour in South Dakota PrairieA dramatic western portrait captured at sunset as a cowboy rides horseback across the South Dakota prairie, silhouetted against glowing golden hour light near Sioux Falls.

Why Sunset Light Is So Beautiful

Golden hour light has several qualities that make it ideal for portraits:

  • softer shadows
  • warmer tones
  • glowing highlights
  • more even lighting on faces

Instead of harsh midday sun creating strong shadows, golden hour light gently wraps around the subject.

The result is that warm, dreamy glow that many people love in outdoor photography.

Morning Sessions Can Be Magical Too

Sunrise sessions aren’t as common, but they can be absolutely stunning.

One of my favorite engagement sessions took place on a frosty October morning, when the rising sun painted the sky with pinks, purples, and golds.

Morning sessions can also work beautifully when we want light from the east rather than the west.

Sometimes the direction of the light makes all the difference.

Clouds Can Elevate a Portrait

Many people hope for a perfectly sunny day.

But photographers often secretly hope for a little drama in the sky.

Clouds can add incredible texture and color to the background. When the sky fills with pinks, golds, and purples, it can elevate a portrait to something truly breathtaking.

Mother Nature sometimes knows exactly what she’s doing.

And when she decides to put on a show, I love capturing every second of it.
