How to Prepare Kids for Family Photos (Without Stress)
One of the biggest concerns parents have before a family photo session is simple:
“What if my kids don’t behave?”
The truth is — kids are kids. And some of the most beautiful photographs happen in the middle of laughter, play, and a little bit of chaos.
As a family photographer in Sioux Falls, I’ve learned something important over the years:
The tone of a photo session is often set long before the camera comes out.
Preparation Starts Before You Arrive

A relaxed session begins with simple preparation.
Make sure everyone has:
One small story taught me this lesson forever. A grandmother once brought her granddaughter to a session, and no matter how hard we tried, she just wasn’t having it.
Later we realized she hadn’t eaten for quite some time.
Once she had a snack, her whole personality came back to life.
So my biggest tip?
Never underestimate the power of snacks.
Your Energy Sets the Tone
Kids read their parents’ emotions instantly.
If parents arrive relaxed and playful, children usually follow their lead.
But if everyone piles into the car stressed and frustrated, that energy comes along to the session.
Your photographer’s goal is to create a fun and relaxed experience, not a stressful one.
Your Child Doesn’t Need to Smile the Whole Time
Parents often worry that their child needs to be smiling and engaged the entire session.
But some children are shy at first. Others need time to warm up.
And that’s okay.
A single giggle, curious glance, or playful moment can create a beautiful photograph.
Your session isn’t ruined if your child isn’t smiling the entire time.
Sometimes the quiet moments are the most meaningful.

Play Creates the Best Photos
Instead of stiff poses, I encourage families to:
Young children especially don’t want to sit perfectly still for very long.
And honestly… sometimes dads don’t either.
Keeping things moving allows personalities to shine.

The Real Goal of Family Photography
Family photos shouldn’t just capture a pose.
They should capture a memory of the experience itself.
Years later, when you see that image hanging on the wall, I want you to remember:
Not the stress of trying to make everything perfect.
Because the most beautiful family photos are rarely perfect.
They’re simply real.
